Jump For Joy

Although I'm a fan of quite a few current TV shows such as Modern Family, Cougar Town, and The Amazing Race I've always been a fan of sitcoms from my childhood.

As a gay man I naturally can quote almost every line from The Golden Girls. I could sit and watch every episode in a row from season one through season seven. What was so special about this show I don't know but it makes me laugh to this day. Each of the actresses has a special place in my heart and I know they'll always be there in reruns to make me laugh.

I grew up watching Roseanne with my parents. For them I think it was being able to relate to the trials and tribulations of the Connor family. Many people can not stand to hear that unique laugh that Roseanne has but it always made me laugh. There was something very real about the show and almost every episode was something that an average middle-class family like mine could relate to.

The Nanny is another favorite of mine. Again, like Roseanne, Fran Drescher has a particularly irritating quality...her voice. It never bothered me and I still enjoy curling up on the couch when A is gone (he can't stand the show) and watch her character chase after Mr. Sheffield while teaching his children some valuable life lessons.

What can I say about the four women from Atlanta? Designing Women was also a favorite of mine if for no other reason than I loved to watch Julia Sugarbaker get fired up on almost every episode over some cause or another. Throw in the lone black man, Anthony and you've got a great cast. Who doesn't remember Bernice and her random outbursts of "black man, black man" whenever Anthony walked into the room?

Classic TV may be just that, classic but it still is a part of my life and will be for many years to come.

  3. Teresa I have no idea. I think the whole fascination began long before I came out...I just roll with it.
