A Scene

We all have a best friend, right? When I was single mine was my friend J. He and I did everything together. We shared a lot of the same likes and dislikes. One of our particular likes was to wander around Chicago neighborhoods all day.

Then I met Adam. My friendship with J deteriorated rapidly because I started spending all my time with Adam. Adam was the first guy I didn't try to push away...in fact I couldn't get enough of him. This meant less time for J...and he didn't like this. Needless to say our friendship continued to go downhill until one day it was non-existent. I spent a lot of time after this reflecting on what had happened and coming to the conclusion that while J had acted badly I certainly wasn't innocent either.

Over the past five years J and I have run into each other at work and out and about in Chicago. We were cordial to each other but it was still awkward, at least for me. Earlier this month I was surprised to see that J and I were working together. At first I was apprehensive but thought it would be good for us to spend time together. We spent our down time in Boston wandering neighborhoods. We shopped and had dinner and drinks. It was as if things had never soured between us. At the end of the day I thought to myself "this was such a nice day."

Where our friendship will go from here I have no idea but it's nice to know the old wounds have healed, at least on my part.

  1. I am in the process of breaking up with a good friend. It's not easy...but necessary. Hopefully one day we can have a nice day together again. But it will be a long, long time.
